Seniors Online Are Having A Blast

February 20th, 2011

Seniors online: the internet has allowed us to communicate in ways we never even imagined twenty or thirty years ago. As baby boomers enter the age where they are considered senior citizens, more are going online for leisure. The internet was not around when they were young. And some seniors may not know how to log on. The internet is used by people of all ages and many of us cannot imagine life without it.

A number of the senior centers offer classes for things like learning how to use the internet. It takes a special person with a lot of patience to teach seniors how to log on. The first step may be as simple as how to turn the computer on and off.

The classes may be individually conducted or in small groups. Typing is one of the skills that may be required to build. Coming from the 60’s and 70s, you will not see many seniors that can type as quickly as many of the younger generation today.

The age of being a senior citizen starts at 60. This age group is from an era when internet was not around. They may not be aware of the things you can explore online. Those with children and grandchildren using the internet can learn from them. From downloading songs, surfing various topics, once the seniors get started, there is a chance they might get hooked!

You may even be able to find that significant other online. You might be able to find love again. They say that 60 is the new 20. Seniors today are more active than ever. As we live longer, stay more active, our horizons broaden.

Seniors can meet with people in social networks. They can mingle with other retired seniors that are looking for companions that share the same hobbies or interests. And maybe some of them can even find love online.

Menopause Can Be Predicted

February 20th, 2011

Menopause is the end of menstruation or the end of fertility for women. At menopause the eggs in the female body reach the lowest count.

A woman’s body has several hundreds of thousands of eggs at birth. The number of eggs gets lower and lower while she ages, so that at menopause she is left with only about 1000.

Every woman will experience menopause differently, because every woman is unique and different. The age menopause start could be 45 for some women, 50 or 55 for others. The menopause symptoms could be severe and almost unbearable for some, or easy and almost unnoticeable for others.

My question to all women is: If you knew the exact age when menopause will happen to you, would you make a life decision based on this fact?

Researchers now say they may be able to determine when the menopause starts, by measuring ovarian volume with trans vaginal ultrasound.

As a woman ages, the ovaries get smaller, and the number of eggs reduces dramatically. Obviously, there is a proportional relation between the volume of the ovaries and the number of eggs left in it. With mathematical and computer models, the scientists produce a formula to actually predict when a woman will stop being able to bear children.

This test is revolutionary for women attending fertility clinics, or women treated for cancer.

Regarding the assisted reproductive technology, the overall success rate is still low, especially for older women. Researches showed that a 30 years old woman attempting to get pregnant has a 30 percent chance, a 35 year old woman has a 24 percent chance, while a 40 years old has only 17 percent chance!

My conclusion is obvious. No woman should wait too long to plan babies, no matter how advanced the assisted reproductive technology is.

So should a 30 years old woman go for a test to figure out how many years of fertility she has left? Should she make career decisions based on this test? Is this test good enough to predict menopause?

The answer is NO to all these questions. You can definitely not go and tell someone to change their life based on a predictive test!
